Should I make anything of the fact that I identified with both Florence and Edward? (An alarming prospect.) More likely, it's that the core - or most operative - parts of their personalities, which lead to the failure of their romance, are drawn vividly enough to be readily recognisable just as aspects of being human. I wasn't sure where this film was going, not having read the book; it was heavy and, at points, piercing, but also a bit indistinct in tone and what it was saying, with some odd pacing, so, good but flawed.
