These things are so delicate. Grass could so easily have been completely minor, even boring, as its cafe conversations cycle one after another in close, still black and white shots. But at some point, helped no doubt by the priming effect of director Hong Sang-soo's wonderful Yourself and Yours, something flipped and I was struck by the sense that it was magic. Unprogrammatic while rippling with meaning; I liked the female writer-observer, and I liked the way she was pretty unpleasant in ways seemingly beyond her control.
