That it's relatively restrained in its depiction of the manipulations and encouragement of self-hatred engaged in by the counsellors of the Christian gay conversion camp to which Cam is sent makes The Miseducation of Cameron Post all the more effective - the emotional violence and damage being done is perfectly clear without the need for physical abuse or deliberate attempts to harm the children ('disciples') who are there. The streaks of lyricism running through the film, most notably in the homecoming ball scenes at the start, work too.
Chloe Grace Moretz is good, and I didn't mind the way Cam was characterised as being - mostly - on the inarticulate side (i.e. like an actual teenager). If anything, even better is the ensemble cast of the other teens (albeit probably all played by twenty-somethings), nearly all of whom manage to find real poignancy in their characters. John Gallagher Jr (showed to also be a victim) and Jennifer Ehle also. Reminded me a bit of Short Term 12 (which was better). Very good.
Also, latest addition to the 'great use of a song in a movie' list: "What's Up?" by 4 Non Blondes, here treated as the (90s) classic that it is.
