There's an interplay between the lightly, brightly jangling guitars and the lilting, always at least potentially melancholy folk touches that always delights when coupled with sensitive singing and tightly, interestingly constructed songs - like here. This came out in 1989, which seems to have been peak time for this kind of stuff (to varying degrees - the Sundays, the Church, post-the Smiths, and in fact Johnny Marr features very recognisably on a couple of the songs on Kite).
