I realised about three-quarters of the way through this rewatch that the appeal of these films is fundamentally aesthetic - in a way that only makes sense in the context of a highly kinetic and stylised action movie genre. Which maybe goes a fair way to explaining why they don't bore, even on a rewatch like this.
